Child Feeding Challenges Discussion

The meeting experienced technical difficulties with audio and host permissions, which were eventually resolved. Sharney apologized for the delay and greeted participants, while Dr. Vivek confirmed he could now hear the others. The meeting was set to discuss child feeding challenges, with Ravi and Sushma presenting slides on the topic.

Parental Feeding Challenges Expert Series

The webinar, hosted by Superstars Child Research and Development Center, launched their new weekly expert series focused on empowering parents with knowledge about identifying triggering factors in their children’s feeding challenges. Dr. Vivek Jagani, a leading pediatric dentist and highly commended Periodontist of the year 2025, joined Dr. Samraj Gaddam, the clinical director, to discuss the root causes of feeding difficulties and share practical strategies. The series will cover topics such as gastrointestinal concerns, positioning, motor skills, primitive reflexes, orofacial concerns, and sensory processing issues, with a focus on parental feeding behaviors.

Orofacial Evaluation in Children

Dr. Vivek discussed the importance of orofacial evaluation in identifying structural and functional issues in children, particularly focusing on feeding difficulties. He explained the evaluation process, which includes examining facial expressions, eating patterns, jaw and teeth alignment, and head and neck posture. Dr. Vivek emphasized the role of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and proprioception in children’s ability to chew and swallow. He also highlighted the need for proper dental evaluation beyond just cavities, including assessing tooth number, size, and occlusion. Dr. Samraj suggested focusing on improper dentition, caries, and phases of feeding in future discussions.

Tongue and Lip Evaluation in Children

Dr. Vivek discussed the evaluation of lips and tongue in children, focusing on identifying tongue ties, assessing tongue size, and evaluating oral cavity structures. He emphasized the importance of balanced muscle function between the lips and tongue for proper jaw development and speech. Dr. Vivek also explained how tongue posture affects overall body symmetry and highlighted the need for dental interventions and orthodontic treatments in some cases.

C-Section, Asymmetry, and Feeding Patterns

Dr. Vivek discussed the correlation between C-section births and facial asymmetry in children, particularly noting that many autistic children were born as C-section babies with normal birth weight and full term. He highlighted the impact of gadget use during meals, explaining how it disrupts proper chewing and swallowing patterns. Dr. Vivek also explained the link between high-arched palates and bruxism, noting that the deeper the palate, the more likely a child is to grind their teeth. He emphasized the importance of proper tongue posture and its role in articulation and swallowing, concluding with a discussion on the management strategies for children with oromotor challenges and associated feeding difficulties.

Autism-Friendly Dental Care Strategies

Dr. Vivek discussed the challenges of treating autistic children in dental clinics, emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible environment. He advised parents not to overprepare their children for dental visits and suggested preparing them gradually at home with simple activities like counting teeth. Dr. Vivek also addressed treatment protocols, emphasizing that each child’s treatment should be tailored to their specific needs rather than following generalized patterns shared in support groups. He explained the difference between fluoride treatments and root canal procedures, clarifying that root canal is necessary to address pain and infection in the tooth’s canal system.

Fluoride and Feeding Techniques

Dr. Vivek explained the role of fluoride in dental health, emphasizing that it is a preventive measure for healthy teeth and cannot correct dental decay. He discussed the importance of orofacial evaluation to determine appropriate feeding techniques for children with structural abnormalities, including selecting the correct size and type of spoon. The discussion highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to feeding, considering both structural factors and environmental influences, rather than simply forcing children to eat.

Child Oral Rehabilitation Stages

Dr. Vivek outlined the oral rehabilitation stages for children, emphasizing the importance of a preparatory stage involving simple procedures like cleaning and fluoride to help children understand dental stimuli. He explained that the corrective stage addresses dental issues, while interceptive orthodontics focuses on structural corrections like tongue ties and jaw bone issues. Dr. Vivek stressed the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between dental professionals, occupational therapists, and speech therapists to provide holistic care for children with feeding and oral challenges. He also advised parents to allow children time to adjust to the dental environment, emphasizing the importance of patience and understanding in the treatment process.
